How to Position Your Flat-Screen TV on a Wall

How to Position Your Flat-Screen TV on a Wall

Throughout history, the television has been positioned in several different ways. Early TVs had small screens and were encased in large bulky cabinets rested safely on the floor. As technology advanced, the screens grew larger and the casing smaller. These TVs moved off the ground and rested on stands.

Televisions today no longer need to rest on the ground or on stands. A growing trend with televisions is to install them on your wall. Here’s why you should hang your television on the wall and steps on how to do so properly.

Why You Should Mount Your TV

One of the most important reasons to position your TV to the wall is to increase the viewer’s pleasure. A perfectly placed TV removes any obstacles that may block part of the screen or the entire screen. Hanging your TV allows people to see the action from any location in the room. This also allows your children to play on the floor without blocking the picture.

Another reason to place your television on a wall is to protect your furniture. If you place it on a table, desk, or stand, your TV can slide and move. Over time, this movement can cut deep grooves into your furniture. By affixing your TV to the wall, you can protect your furniture and keep it looking new.

Finally, today’s television manufacturers design their product with a sleek aesthetic appeal. Hanging your television from the wall not only highlights this modern design, but also makes your home look more modern in the process.

Steps to Mount a TV

Now that you understand the benefits of hanging your television, you need to understand the process. While it’s not a complex process, you need to take extreme care when hanging your TV. If it’s done incorrectly, you may find yourself watching a movie on a screen that tilts up—or even shopping to replace a broken TV. If you are unsure of your ability to perform the following steps correctly, contact a professional.

1. Find a Place to Hang Your TV

The first thing you need to do is find the perfect place for your TV. The location will largely depend on the room. You will want to find a place that has limited glare and is visible from all viewing areas. You also want to make sure it is high enough off the floor to avoid any potential obstacles.

2. Place the Wall Bracket

Once you have found the optimal place to hang your TV, you need to make sure you can do so. This requires you to attach the wall bracket system to the wall. To do this, you will need to use a stud finder to locate two studs within the wall. Without these studs, your rigging system won’t have enough strength to support the weight of the TV. When you find the studs, measure, drill, and hang the wall mount.

3. Attach the TV to the Mounting Arm

After you have affixed the main wall mount to your chosen spot on the wall, you will need to install the TV mounting arm. But first, rest your television on its screen on a soft surface. If the surface is not soft, you may scratch the viewing surface.

Attach the mounting arm to the appropriate holes in the back of your television. Try not to overtighten the bolts, as this may lead to cracking.

4. Secure the TV

Finally, hang the television on the wall by connecting the wall bracket and the mounting arm. Do not try to complete this step by yourself. Even the weight of a smaller television can feel heavy during this part of the process. The last thing you want to do is drop your TV.

When you think your TV is secure, let the full weight of the device rest on the installed support. Once you feel comfortable that you have properly installed your device, attach the appropriate cables.

If you don’t think you can install this type of rigging properly, don’t risk it. Call a professional technician to have your TV mounted properly.
